Senior Thesis Project

"The Weight of Silence" is a haunting series of mixed-media portraits that gives form to the things we cannot say. Using charcoal, ink, pencil, and gouache, Mahshid Darvishi layers drips, smudges, and raw marks to mirror the turbulence beneath quiet exteriors. Born from personal moments of voicelessness, the work embraces imperfection as truth, inviting viewers to confront their own buried words, unspoken memories, and hidden grief. It is art as empathy—a space where silence is heavy, human, and deeply felt.

“This project came from moments when I felt voiceless, when the words I needed stayed locked inside. I realized how many people carry that same silence in different ways. My work is my way of giving form to that weight—to show that silence is never empty, but full of tension, memory, fear, and longing.” – Mahshid Darvishi
